![]() I spent a week researching in the British Library and got nowhere, so I went to the Records Office, the Archives, the Devon and Exeter Institution - everywhere - and found nothing. ![]() This was one of those rare occasions when my agent and editor both liked the title, and they approved of the idea. After all, I reasoned, everyone had heard of Widecombe Fair with Uncle Tom Cobley and All. I won’t quickly forget the experience I had hit upon the idea of basing the book’s outline on Widecombe Fair. At the same time she commissioned two more books, and I accordingly travelled to London to the British Library, which was then still a part of the British Museum buildings, in order to research Dartmoor. It was in 1994 that I wrote my first novel, and in 1995 I had my third novel accepted by my editor. ![]() There is little doubt that researching can be one of the toughest as well as one of the most rewarding activities for a writer.
